Meijer Highlights STEM Education, Research and Development in Science Hearing

Press Release

Date: April 15, 2021
Issues: Education

U.S. Representative Peter Meijer (R-MI), a member of the House Committee on Science, Space, and Technology, today highlighted the need for investments in STEM education and our research enterprise in a hearing titled "Reimagining our Innovation Future."

"I represent Michigan's Third Congressional District. Vern Ehlers, who also represented MI-03, sat on this Committee during his congressional tenure, during which "Rising Above the Gathering Storm' was first published by the National Academies in 2007. This congressionally requested report looked at improving K-12 STEM education, developing and recruiting top students, engineers, and scientists from the U.S. and abroad, strengthening the nation's commitment to funding basic research, and ensuring the U.S. is the premier place in the world for innovation.

"My question for the panel is: this 2007 report seems to recommend many of the same actions that Congress is discussing today. What, if anything, has changed? How should we take action to respond to the competitiveness challenge posed by the great number of countries who have emulated our research ecosystem and are robustly investing in research and development? Has the "Gathering Storm' already passed? Are we in response and recovery mode?"
